Israeli Marine Biologist Selected as Finalist for UN Competition
Shimrit Perkol-Finkel, head of the Tel Aviv-based company ECOncrete, has been selected to represent the 'Western EU and Others' region through the United Nations’ WE Empower UN SDG Challenge – the first global competition for women in business who are working to advance the UN’s sustainable development goals.
ECOncrete’s environmentally conscious concrete products help maintain marine life while enhancing the structural integrity, lifespan, and aesthetics of urban waterfronts and coastal structures. ECOncrete’s groundbreaking technology consists of a concrete “recipe” specifically designed to have a beneficial effect on native wildlife and features design attributes such as tiny holes where fish can seek shelter.
The WE Empower Challenge finalists will meet in New York City during the UN General Assembly which begins on September 24th. Perkol-Finkel will represent the “Western EU & Other” region when she competes against the awardees from Africa, Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, Latin American and the Caribbean in a pitch competition hosted by activist and fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.
Perkol-Finkel obtained her PhD in marine biology and ecology from Tel-Aviv University and served as an EU Marie Curie Fellow during her post-doctoral studies at the University of Bologna. Afterwards, in 2012 she cofounded EConcrete to address the ecological damage caused by by concrete ports, breakwaters, and piers.
